Now this isn’t a new tool, and it’s not quite up to date as the author hasn’t updated it for a while – but it’s still exceedingly cool!<\/p>\n

As you know most IP addresses are registered to companies or organizations in blocks, so you can identify which network an edit is coming from as Wikipedia logs the IP address when an anonymous edit is made.<\/p>\n

WikiScanner (also known as Wikipedia Scanner) is a tool created by Virgil Griffith and released on August 14, 2007, which consists of a publicly searchable database that links millions of anonymous Wikipedia edits to the organizations where those edits apparently originated, by cross-referencing the edits with data on the owners of the associated block of IP addresses. WikiScanner does not work on edits made under a username. The Associated Press reported that Griffith wanted “to create minor public relations disasters for companies and organizations [he] dislike[s].”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
