The Metasploit Project is proud to announce the release of the Metasploit Framework version 3.4.1. This release sees the first official non-Windows Meterpreter payload, in PHP as discussed last month here.

Rest assured that more is in store for Meterpreter on other platforms. A new extension called Railgun is now integrated into Meterpreter courtesy of Patrick HVE, giving you scriptable access to Windows APIs and an unprecedented amount of control over post-exploitation.

For those of you wishing to contribute to the framework, a new file called HACKING has been introduced that lays out a few guidelines to make it easier.

This release contains 16 new exploits, 22 new auxiliary modules and 11 new Meterpreter scripts for your pwning enjoyment. The major changes in terms of numbers were:

567 exploits and 283 auxiliary modules (up from 551 and 261 in v3.4)

Over 40 community reported bugs were fixed and numerous interfaces were improved

Metasploit provides useful information and tools for penetration testers, security researchers, and IDS signature developers. This project was created to provide information on exploit techniques and to create a functional knowledgebase for exploit developers and security professionals. The tools and information on this site are provided for legal security research and testing purposes only.

Update Summary

Metasploit now has 551 exploit modules and 261 auxiliary modules (from 445 and 216 respectively in v3.3)

Metasploit is still about twice the size of the nearest Ruby application according to Ohloh.net (400K lines of Ruby)

Over 100 tickets were closed since the last point release and over 200 since v3.3

After five months of development, version 3.4.0 of the Metasploit Framework has been released. Since the last major release (Metasploit 3.3) over 100 new exploits have been added and over 200 bugs have been fixed.

This release includes massive improvements to the Meterpreter payload; both in terms of stability and features, thanks in large part to Stephen Fewer of Harmony Security. The Meterpreter payload can now capture screenshots without migrating, including the ability to bypass Session 0 Isolation on newer Windows operating systems. This release now supports the ability to migrate back and forth between 32-bit and 64-bit processes on a compromised Windows 64-bit operating system. The Meterpreter protocol now supports inline compression using zlib, resulting in faster transfers of large data blocks. A new command, “getsystem”, uses several techniques to gain system access from a low-privileged or administrator-level session, including the exploitation of Tavis Ormandy’s KiTrap0D vulnerability. Brett Blackham contributed a patch to compress screenshots on the server side in JPG format, reducing the overhead of the screen capture command. The pivoting backend of Meterpreter now supports bi-directional UDP and TCP relays, a big upgrade from the outgoing-only TCP pivoting capabilities of version 3.3.3.

This is the first version of Metasploit to have strong support for bruteforcing network protocols and gaining access with cracked credentials. A new mixin has been created that standardizes the options available to each of the brute force modules. This release includes support for brute forcing accounts over SSH, Telnet, MySQL, Postgres, SMB, DB2, and more, thanks to Tod Bearsdley and contributions from Thomas Ring.

Metasploit now has support for generating malicious JSP and WAR files along with exploits for Tomcat and JBoss that use these to gain remote access to misconfigured installations. A new mixin was creating compiling and signing Java applets on fly, courtesy of Nathan Keltner. Thanks to some excellent work by bannedit and Joshua Drake, command injection of a cmd.exe shell on Windows can be staged into a full Meterpreter shell using the new “sessions -u” syntax.

What is Metasploit?

The Metasploit Framework is a development platform for creating security tools and exploits. The framework is used by network security professionals to perform penetration tests, system administrators to verify patch installations, product vendors to perform regression testing, and security researchers world-wide. The framework is written in the Ruby programming language and includes components written in C and assembler.

What does it do?

The framework consists of tools, libraries, modules, and user interfaces. The basic function of the framework is a module launcher, allowing the user to configure an exploit module and launch it at a target system. If the exploit succeeds, the payload is executed on the target and the user is provided with a shell to interact with the payload.

If you don’t already know about Metasploit I would guess you aren’t even in the security industry.

It’s come a long way since it’s early versions and has picked up huge supports from the community.

Metasploit now has 445 exploit modules and 216 auxiliary modules (from 320 and 99 respectively in v3.2)

Metasploit is still about twice the size of the nearest Ruby application according to Ohloh.net (375k lines of Ruby)

Over 180 tickets were closed during the 3.3 development process

Ah Metasploit development cycle seems to be picking up, I guess with greater community support the bugs get ironed out and the new features introduced faster.

Good to see an update so soon after Metasploit Framework v3.0 was released.

I keep closely up to date with Metasploit as it’s pretty much the best free tool out there right now, and certainly the most exciting along with Nmap.

The latest version features a graphical user interface, full support for the Windows platform, and over 450 modules, including 265 remote exploits. Metasploit 3.1 consolidates a year of research and development, integrating ideas and code from some of the sharpest and most innovative folks in the security research community.

The graphical user interface is a major step forward for Metasploit users on the Windows platform. Development of this interface was driven by Fabrice Mourron and provides a wizard-based exploitation system, a graphical file and process browser for the Meterpreter payloads, and a multi-tab console interface. “The Metasploit GUI puts Windows users on the same footing as those running Unix by giving them access to a console interface to the framework” said H D Moore, who worked with Fabrice on the GUI project.

The latest incarnation of the framework includes a bristling arsenal of exploit modules that are sure to put a smile on the face of every information warrior. Notable exploits in the 3.1 release include a remote, unpatched kernel-land exploit for Novell Netware, written by toto, a series of 802.11 fuzzing modules that can spray the local airspace with malformed frames, taking out a wide swath of wireless-enabled devices, and a battery of exploits targeted at Borland’s InterBase product line. “I found so many holes that I just gave up releasing all of them”, said Ramon de Carvalho, founder of RISE Security, and Metasploit contributor.

Metasploit runs on all modern operating systems, including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and most flavors of BSD. Metasploit has been used on a wide range of hardware platforms, from massive Unix mainframes to the tiny Nokia n800 handheld. Users can access Metasploit using the tab-completing console interface, the Gtk GUI, the command line scripting interface, or the AJAX-enabled web interface. The Windows version of Metasploit includes all software dependencies and a selection of useful networking tools.

Finally it’s out of BETA, Metasploit Framework Version 3.0 has been released and it’s a lot more Windows friendly.

The Metasploit Framework (“Metasploit”) is a development platform for creating security tools and exploits. Version 3.0 contains 177 exploits, 104 payloads, 17 encoders, and 3 nop modules. Additionally, 30 auxiliary modules are included that perform a wide range of tasks, including host discovery, protocol fuzzing, and denial of service testing.

Metasploit is used by network security professionals to perform penetration tests, system administrators to verify patch installations, product vendors to perform regression testing, and security researchers world-wide. The framework is written in the Ruby programming language and includes components written in C and assembler.

Metasploit runs on all modern operating systems, including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and most flavors of BSD. Metasploit has been used on a wide range of hardware platforms, from massive Unix mainframes to the tiny Nokia n800 handheld. Users can access Metasploit using the tab-completing console interface, the command line scripting interface, or the AJAX-enabled web interface. The Windows version of Metasploit includes all software dependencies and a selection of useful networking tools.

Metasploit 3 is a from-scratch rewrite of Metasploit 2 using the Ruby scripting language. The development process took nearly two years to complete and resulted in over 100,000 lines of Ruby code.

Metasploit is now released under the Metasploit Framework License. This license allows anyone to use the framework for almost anything, but prevents commercial abuse and outright code theft. The Metasploit Framework License helps keep the platform stable and still allows module developers to choose their own licensing terms for their code (commercial or open source). For more information, please see the license document included in the distribution.
