The Metasploit Project is proud to announce the release of the Metasploit Framework version 3.4.1. This release sees the first official non-Windows Meterpreter payload, in PHP as discussed last month here.

Rest assured that more is in store for Meterpreter on other platforms. A new extension called Railgun is now integrated into Meterpreter courtesy of Patrick HVE, giving you scriptable access to Windows APIs and an unprecedented amount of control over post-exploitation.

For those of you wishing to contribute to the framework, a new file called HACKING has been introduced that lays out a few guidelines to make it easier.

This release contains 16 new exploits, 22 new auxiliary modules and 11 new Meterpreter scripts for your pwning enjoyment. The major changes in terms of numbers were:

567 exploits and 283 auxiliary modules (up from 551 and 261 in v3.4)

Over 40 community reported bugs were fixed and numerous interfaces were improved

Metasploit provides useful information and tools for penetration testers, security researchers, and IDS signature developers. This project was created to provide information on exploit techniques and to create a functional knowledgebase for exploit developers and security professionals. The tools and information on this site are provided for legal security research and testing purposes only.

Update Summary

Metasploit now has 551 exploit modules and 261 auxiliary modules (from 445 and 216 respectively in v3.3)

Metasploit is still about twice the size of the nearest Ruby application according to Ohloh.net (400K lines of Ruby)

Over 100 tickets were closed since the last point release and over 200 since v3.3

After five months of development, version 3.4.0 of the Metasploit Framework has been released. Since the last major release (Metasploit 3.3) over 100 new exploits have been added and over 200 bugs have been fixed.

This release includes massive improvements to the Meterpreter payload; both in terms of stability and features, thanks in large part to Stephen Fewer of Harmony Security. The Meterpreter payload can now capture screenshots without migrating, including the ability to bypass Session 0 Isolation on newer Windows operating systems. This release now supports the ability to migrate back and forth between 32-bit and 64-bit processes on a compromised Windows 64-bit operating system. The Meterpreter protocol now supports inline compression using zlib, resulting in faster transfers of large data blocks. A new command, “getsystem”, uses several techniques to gain system access from a low-privileged or administrator-level session, including the exploitation of Tavis Ormandy’s KiTrap0D vulnerability. Brett Blackham contributed a patch to compress screenshots on the server side in JPG format, reducing the overhead of the screen capture command. The pivoting backend of Meterpreter now supports bi-directional UDP and TCP relays, a big upgrade from the outgoing-only TCP pivoting capabilities of version 3.3.3.

This is the first version of Metasploit to have strong support for bruteforcing network protocols and gaining access with cracked credentials. A new mixin has been created that standardizes the options available to each of the brute force modules. This release includes support for brute forcing accounts over SSH, Telnet, MySQL, Postgres, SMB, DB2, and more, thanks to Tod Bearsdley and contributions from Thomas Ring.

Metasploit now has support for generating malicious JSP and WAR files along with exploits for Tomcat and JBoss that use these to gain remote access to misconfigured installations. A new mixin was creating compiling and signing Java applets on fly, courtesy of Nathan Keltner. Thanks to some excellent work by bannedit and Joshua Drake, command injection of a cmd.exe shell on Windows can be staged into a full Meterpreter shell using the new “sessions -u” syntax.

The latest big buzz is Fast-Track released recently at ShmooCon by Securestate, basically Fast-Track is an automated penetration suite for penetration testers.

For those of you new to Fast-Track, Fast-Track is a python based open-source project aimed at helping Penetration Testers in an effort to identify, exploit, and further penetrate a network. Fast-Track was originally conceived when David Kennedy was on a penetration test and found that there was generally a lack of tools or automation in certain attacks that were normally extremely advanced and time consuming.

In an effort to reproduce some of David’s advanced attacks and propagate it down to the team at SecureState, David ended up writing Fast-Track for the public. Many of the issues Fast-Track exploits are due to improper sanitizing of client-side data within web applications, patch management, or lack of hardening techniques. All of these are relatively simple to fix if you know what to look for, but as penetration testers are extremely common findings for us.

Fast-Track arms the penetration tester with advanced attacks that in most cases have never been performed before. Sit back relax, crank open a can of jolt cola and enjoy the ride.

It’s something a lot of people will enjoy as many parts of a pen-test are very monotonous and don’t really take your full concentration, a semi-automated approach with a skillful eye watching for false-positives and false-negatives is always more effective and efficient than fully manual or fully automated testing.

Dependencies – Metasploit 3, SQLite, PYMSSQL, FreeTDS, Pexpect, ClientForms, Beautiful Soup, and Psycho.

Installation – When extracting the tarball, run the setup.py file by executing python setup.py install, this will install the needed dependencies MINUS SQLite and Metasploit 3, you should specify the metasploit path or it will default to the BackTrack 3 installation menu. Once the installation is completed, Fast-Track should be fully functional.

You can download Fast-Track 4.0 here:

The Metasploit Framework is an advanced open-source exploit development platform. The 3.0 tree represents a complete rewrite of the 2.0 codebase and provides a scalable and extensible framework for security tool development. The 3.0 Beta 3 release includes support for exploit automation, 802.11 wireless packet injection, and kernel-mode payloads.

Windows users are now presented with a RXVT console and an updated Cygwin environment, which greatly improves the usability of the 3.0 interface on the Windows platform.

The Metasploit Web Interface is still in development, but this release includes a preview of what the end functionality will look like. The web interface provides a “webtop” interface for interacting with the framework and uses aynschronous javascript to provide live searching. A early version of Metasploit IDE is also included with the web interface.

Downloads for all platforms can be found here:

The latest version can be pulled directly from Subversion:

$ svn co http://metasploit.com/svn/framework3/trunk/

Unix users may need to install the openssl zlib and dl ruby modules for the Framework to load. If you are using Ubuntu you will need to run the following commands:

# apt-get install libzlib-ruby
# apt-get install libopenssl-ruby
# apt-get install libdl-ruby

Unix users who wish to try the new web interface will need to install the ‘rubygems’ package and the ‘rails’ gem. Please see www.rubyonrails.com for more information and platform-specific installation instructions.

Users of other distributions or Unix flavors may want to grab the latest version of ruby from www.ruby-lang.org and build it from source. We highly recommend using Ruby version 1.8.4 or newer.Windows users will need to exit out of any running Cygwin-based applications before running the installer or using the Framework. The old 3.0 installation should be uninstalled prior to installing and using this version.

The release packages include Subversion repository information allowing you to synchronize your Beta 3 installation with the live development tree. The Windows installer includes a “MSFUpdate” menu item that uses Subversion to download the latest updates.Unix users will need to install the Subversion client change into the framework directory and execute ‘svn update’.

On Unix systems, Subversion will complain about the self-signed certificate in use at metasploit.com. Please verify that the fingerprint matches the one below before accepting it:

The Metasploit Framework is an advanced open-source exploit development platform. The 2.7 release includes three user interfaces, 157 exploits and 76 payloads. The Framework will run on any modern operating system that has a working Perl interpreter. The Windows installer includes a slimmed-down version of the Cygwin environment.

Windows users are encouraged to update as soon as possible. A number of improvements were made that should make the Windows experience a little less painful and a lot more reliable. All updates to 2.6 have been rolled into 2.7, along with some new exploits and minor features.

You can download the new metasploit here:

 – Unix: http://metasploit.com/tools/framework-2.7.tar.gz
– Win32: http://metasploit.com/tools/framework-2.7.exe

A demonstration of the msfweb interface is running live from:

This may be the LAST 2.x version of the Metasploit Framework. All development resources are now being applied to version 3.0. More information about version 3.0 can be found online at:

Exploit modules designed for the 2.2 through 2.6 releases should maintain compatibility with 2.7. If you run into any problems using older modules with this release, please let us know.

For more information about the Framework and this release in general, please refer to the online documentation, particularly the User Guide:
